Rescuing the Master’s Dog
Living with the Master
It was Christmas Day in Germany. Not a soul was out as I took Baliram on a morning walk through the forest. The air was chilly and a thick mist enveloped us, giving the forest an otherworldly feel. We made our way down the trail’s twists and turns to the valley below. It was so peaceful and beautiful in the forest that morning that we walked farther than we ever walked before, past the horseshoe dam to the river bend then up a barely used path through the oak trees.
Baliram was up ahead and before you know it I couldn’t see him anymore.
I called out to him and waited patiently as he is such a good dog and he always comes back. While waiting I took in the fullness of the forest. I admired the moss on the trees, each tendril adorned with a sparkling dewdrop gifted from the heavy mist. I listened to the bubbling of the river meandering below. It was beautiful.
“Baliram!” I called again after a few minutes had passed. “Baliram, come!”
Nothing.
“Baliram! Baliram, come!” Maybe he was far away? I called some more so he would be able to follow my voice back.
Time passed and still no Baliram. A hint of concern was coming across me. “Don’t tell me I have lost my Master’s dog!” I thought to myself.
I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw him finally coming down the track. He had a funny look on his face though that I initially thought was remorse for running off like that. But he was slower than usual…
Arriving just before my feet he collapsed to the ground.
“Oh no!” I thought. “What has happened?”
He just laid there, looking at me. I checked his paws, nothing. I looked him over and there was nothing obvious, no cuts or bleeding. But still, he would not get up. Minutes passed… this was not good.
I coaxed him to get up just so I could try to figure out what was wrong but he would immediately fall back on his left side. He just would not get up.
We were several kilometres away from home, deep in the valley’s thick forest and it was just starting to rain. In my mind I started to think, “Can I carry him up the mountain?” But no, he is a big dog and I am simply not strong enough.
His gentle caramel-coloured eyes continued to look at me, but he wouldn’t move or if he did he would just collapse again.
What was he trying to tell me? I wish I knew.
Reaching into my pocket I found my mobile phone, just praying that it had a signal. Two bars! What a relief. I called Prema back at the house and told her the situation.
“Where are you?” She asked. I tried my best to describe the track, one of countless trails through these woods and just hoped that she would be able to find us.
If I could reach Prema, I thought, I might also be able to reach the Master who was out of town. Never taking my eyes off Baliram I dialled his number and whispered under my breath “Pick up. Pick up Master, pick up.”
The phone rang out.
I dialled again, praying. Then again.
One by one, large raindrops splashed my coat, and just like that the light rain turned into a proper downpour. “Oh no, what am I going to do?” It had been about 15 minutes that Baliram was not able to get up and he must be getting cold… and now with the rain… I needed help.
Brrrrring brrrring, brrrring brrrring. Thank goodness! It was Master Sri Avinash calling me back. He listened calmly as I described the situation then asked me to switch to a video call so he could see Baliram and send him some healing. I pointed the phone towards Bali.
Baliram must have felt the Master’s energy immediately as within about a minute he got up and started to make his first steps. I could not believe it. He walked about 2 metres before collapsing again on his left side and I noticed that his rear left foot seemed to be curling in and that he was unable to put it on the ground as he tried to walk.
Master continued to send healing, and to my astonishment Baliram kept on getting up of his own accord and limping a little further down the track before sitting, not collapsing, on the ground.
He was recovering so quickly that it almost made me look like I had been exaggerating the severity of what happened, because here he was walking around then sitting for a minute, then up again walking. He wasn’t even limping much anymore.
After about 7 minutes I had to say, “Master, I think he is fine now and I should probably go because Baliram is off walking so far down the track now that I have to go now to keep up with him!!!”
I quickly thanked Master so much for this rescue in our time of need and then jogged to catch up to Baliram, amazed, thankful and relieved that he was ok. “The girls will never believe this!” I thought, as I put Baliram on his lead and we continued to walk in our usual long strides.
A short while down the track we saw Prema and Anandamayi hurriedly making their way towards us, with a blanket to make a stretcher for Baliram and a first aid kit. You should have seen their faces when they saw us! I wish I had my camera ready to take a photo because it was priceless. They were stunned!
Their eyes darted from Baliram to me with a mixture of great surprise and amazement, all the while trying to comprehend what was going on. This was not the image they were expecting to see, that is for sure.
Smiling from ear to ear as we walked briskly towards them I called out, “Master gave him some healing!” by way of explanation. Prema let out a chuckle of happy surprise and both of them shook their heads with wonder and relief.
When we got home I called Master again to let him know that Baliram seemed to be doing great.
“See, Baliram knows how to get his Christmas present!” He joked on the phone. “He’ll be fine now, he’ll heal up, this is nothing for him,” he reassured us. His calm certainty erased any traces of worry in us.
When it comes to animals, Master Sri Avinash just loves them and he absolutely adores our dogs. Every day he gives them a pat, whispering to himself, “Such beautiful dogs,” and shaking his head in the way he does when he just can’t find any more words to express how deeply he loves them. When he sends them healing from time to time, you can see their eyes smile and become a little sleepy from how peaceful they are feeling.
Critical moments like these always make me reflect on how precious and fortunate I am to have the opportunity to live with the Master and the incredible blessings that come with it. He has come to our rescue countless times not only for myself but for every being in his care. He is always thinking of us, guiding us and protecting us.
On this occasion he poured out his love and protection for his most beloved dog, Baliram. I am sure Baliram is loving this life and is forever grateful towards his Master. How fortunate we all are to live with him.
