Question

To renounce the world means you let go of what’s not who you are. You’re letting go of things that don’t represent you.

For example, if you haven’t had a shower for a month, when you have a shower you wash off all the dirt that is not part of who you are. When you renounce, you renounce all the dirt in your mind that’s not who you are—you let go of every false idea about yourself.

Sometimes you see a big tree and there are other plants nearby which climb all over it, drowning it from light and suffocating it. So to renounce is like cutting away all those climbing plants so that the tree can get the light again, can be itself.

This is the essence of a spiritual life, where every moment of every day you’re striving to cut away all those vines that have latched onto that tree of yourself. In other words, all these ideas and concepts you have, which are known as ‘conditioning’. Ideas like—I’m spiritual, I’m not spiritual, I’m rich, I’m poor, I like this, I don’t like that, I’m creative, I’m not creative, I’m good at music, I’m not good at music.

When all these ideas are gone, you’re left with nothing but purity, nothing but 24 carat gold with no other metals mixed in there. You’re left with a quiet freedom.
