Be Yourself

New Year’s Eve Satsang with Sri Avinash.

New Year’s Resolution

This evening’s talk is about a new year’s resolution. If you haven’t got one yet, maybe this could be your new year’s resolution. And if you have one already, this could be your second. Let 2015 be the year of being yourself. Why would you want to be yourself? Because I assume you want to be happy.

To be ‘yourself’—what does that mean? What self? Is it the body part of yourself, is it the mind part of yourself, or is it the soul part of yourself? Being which one of these is your new year’s resolution?

Being the body self means this body. For example, my first place of landing on this planet was Nha Trang, Vietnam, I am the son of a fisherman, and this body has black hair. So that’s the body self. If you see yourself as the body self, then your life will be fearful. This doesn’t mean you go around telling your boss you’re afraid every day—you’ll lose your job if you do that! But your life will be sponsored by fear. Why is that? It’s very simple—because the body has a deadline, and that deadline is called death. Basically, your life is a race against time. That’s why there’s what’s called a ‘mid-life crisis’. That means you hit middle age and you get knocked over, thinking, “I’ve only got half my life left and I haven’t achieved anything.”

“If you see yourself as the body self, then your life will be fearful… because the body has a deadline, and that deadline is called death. Basically, your life is a race against time.”

Now if you see yourself as the mind, then your life will be like a yo-yo. Your life will fluctuate. That means today you feel good, tomorrow you don’t feel so good. You might feel good for five minutes, and you feel not so good for five years. For example when you flick the yo-yo up, it comes up, but when you flick it down it can stay down there for a long time. It’s like a TV commercial in Australia which says the prices are, “Down Down, staying down.” That’s like the mind. When the mind makes a commercial in your head in the form of thoughts, it says, “Down, down, stay down.”

Thank God you’re not the mind, because there’s a part of you called the soul. So sometimes the soul will come and rescue you out of the down. It gets you out for some time, and for a couple of days you feel great. But guess what you do? You run back, down, down, down, down. Why? Because you see yourself as the mind, and the mind fluctuates.

Let’s use the elimination method to know what the soul is – this way we can know how to be ourselves as the soul. When you’re being yourself but that self is not the body and that self is not the mind, then that self is the soul, or you can say “I am the soul.” You can almost change the words, “I’m being myself” to, “I’m being my soul.”

Now, what happens to a person when they are being their soul? They won’t be fearful, they won’t be afraid of death, because it’s the body that is fear-sponsored and afraid of death. So your life will be fear-less. If you’re not afraid of death, are you going to be disturbed if you get a $200 parking fine? When your business goes bust, and you’re millions and millions of dollars in debt, are you going to be disturbed and fearful? No. Because it is the body and mind that experiences fear, there will be no disturbance if you are being yourself as the soul.

“What happens to a person when they are being their soul? They won’t be fearful, they won’t be afraid of death, because it’s the body that is fear-sponsored and afraid of death. So your life will be fear-less.”

Now, the body and the mind can’t imagine that, because they are not the soul. For example, how can a person go bust in business, have millions of dollars in debt, and still have a smile? It’s simple—if the person is being themself as the soul. When the person is making a speech, and the whole world is watching, would the person be disturbed and nervous? Not if they are being themself as the soul. There’s no fluctuation of thoughts, like, “I can’t make a mistake in this. I’ve got to get it right, otherwise I’ll make a fool of myself and the whole world will see.” The person who’s being themself as the soul won’t have these types of thoughts.

Now let’s assume we want to be ourselves as the soul for our new year’s resolution. Immediately we have a problem. The problem is we have been practicing all our life to be ourselves as the body and the mind. We’ve been trained to be the body and the mind. At school you want to be top in the class, because you get a certificate, saying ‘Top in mathematics’. We’ve been trained to be ‘smart’, but even with a smart mind our life will still fluctuate and unhappiness will come.

“So what I’m saying is, it’s very difficult to be yourself as the soul, because of the training we’ve had. We haven’t been trained to be ourselves as the soul. If we were trained, we’d be good at it.”

Now, to train to be yourself as the soul is not harder than training to be yourself as the mind, or to be yourself as the body. It’s not harder. It’s only harder because we have practiced the other two more. We spend all our waking hours being ourselves as the body and the mind. That’s what you’re focussing on for the whole day, until you’re drained, and then suddenly you think, “Oh yeah, I did that meditation course, I better do 15 minutes of meditation before I go to bed.” It’s like running a 40 kilometre marathon before playing in the soccer final. You don’t do that, do you? You make sure you have a good sleep the night before and you’re fresh, and then you go for it. That’s why the Masters, for example, say to do your meditation first thing in the morning when you wake up—you’re fresh, you’re ready for battle. Battle against the old habits of being the body and the mind.

Now, once we realize that we’ve been trained to be the body and the mind, how are we going change to be ourself as the soul? Where are you going to start? What are you going to do? What we need to do is spend time and learn from those Masters who are being themself as the soul. We need to observe, absorb and adopt their soulful way of living. Start watching a Master. See how they walk, see how they run, see what they eat, see how many times they smile each day, see if they ever get disturbed. Check them out.

So a wise person will look for someone that is being themself as the soul, then watch, feel and absorb them. Because if you can feel and absorb, that means it has entered your soul. You start to remember who you are, as the soul.

For example, disciples will often sit near their Master, and the Master will transmit the teachings to their disciple. The Master is a transmitter, and the disciple is a receiver of the transmission. So what’s the transmission? It can’t be only the Master’s words, because you can read words in a book, and words still belong to the level of the mind. The Master transmits and the student feels and absorbs. Feels what, and absorbs what? If it’s not words, what is it? It’s the feeling of what it’s like to be the soul. And to feel what it’s like to be the soul is to feel what it’s like to be free. Free of fear, free of worries.

When I had the opportunity to spend time with my Master I started to watch, feel and absorb her. How the Master feels as a soul—I would feel that, and then absorb, and my tears would come in joy. And it feels great, because the Master feels great. I couldn’t get enough of it. My Master only gave talks on Tuesdays, so I couldn’t wait for Tuesdays. And when my Master talks, and shares from her feelings, she doesn’t only use words—it’s more the feelings that are transmitted, not the words. The words are just envelopes, it is the feelings that are the letter. And I would listen, feel and absorb.

It feels beautiful. You’ll fall in love with that feeling. You’ll fall in love with the Master, because the Master is being themself as the soul, and you are feeling that, you are remembering that, you’re being yourself as the soul. You’ll fall in love with yourself. You’ll feel magnificent and beautiful without any egotism or proving or anything like that.

So let being yourself as the soul be your new year’s resolution for 2015. Be a warrior—you’ll need to be a warrior, because your old habits will not allow you to be soul-like. That identity of the body and the mind has been trained and ingrained so well, that you have to have the courage of a warrior. One great Master said beautifully, that you need more courage than a warrior fighting in the front line of a battle field, to realize yourself, to be yourself as the soul.
So you need courage.

“The Master is a transmitter, and the disciple is a receiver of the transmission. So what’s the transmission?… It’s the feeling of what it’s like to be the soul. And to feel what it’s like to be the soul is to feel what it’s like to be free. Free of fear, free of worries.”

Be Yourself - Eagle flying overhead in the sun setting sky. Satsang with Sri Avinash Do

You want to be yourself as the soul? It takes massive courage. Risk. Risk to be laughed at. Risk that the family might be upset. Risk that you may not have financial security. There are people who sacrifice their life for the Master and get no money in return. Who would do that? Work for nothing? I did it. I went and served my Master for three and a half years, working an average of 14 hours a day, cooking rice in India, and helping in the kitchen in Europe. I worked fourteen hours a day and paid for my accommodation and food—I basically payed to work instead of getting paid to work.

But do you know how many people are trying to live like that? A lot. For example I was one amongst thousands that go and serve my Master. There are people who travel from all over the world—they work to save up money and then they pay to work for the Master. It might be uncommon in a certain context, but when I was there, it was not uncommon. There’s thousands.

What I’m saying is, you’ve got to be courageous. The mind won’t let you be free. The mind won’t let you be yourself. So you’ve got to knock the mind over. This means, every time it tells you garbage thoughts (thoughts that are not true, telling you to be who you are not), you should have a mantra that says, “Thanks for the suggestion, but no thanks.” You’ve got to be like that. You’ve got to be ruthless against the mind. With this attitude you’ll be able to be yourself as that loving soul.

So, I’ll let you choose your new year’s resolution. Because we all have free will. God gave us something that even God can’t take back—that’s free will. We have free will to choose.
